MICHIGAN– Fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors and Big Brothers – get ready, it’s time to head back to school. February 16-20 is Take Your Dad to School Week in our Michigan schools.
The Michigan Fatherhood Coalition encourages teachers, principals, administrators and school personnel to hold father-friendly activities throughout February allowing dads to share a few moments with their child in his or her school. The reason is simple: Children whose fathers participate in their school activities are more likely to have higher test scores, better academic and attendance records and fewer behavior problems than their peers whose fathers do not participate, according to a U.S. Department of Education study.
Responsible Fatherhood Awareness Month is especially important for Michigan because statistics have shown that more and more of Michigan’s children are living in a home without their father.” said Mike Kildee, President of the Michigan Fatherhood Coalition. “For children to achieve success in the classroom and in life it is so important that they have their father or a responsible male role model there to support and guide them.”
Take Your Dad to School Week is mutually beneficial to both father and child. Statistics show that fathers involved with their children are healthier, happier, and generally are better workers, spouses and parents. Men involved with their children feel better about themselves and have greater success in their careers and lives.
Schools and teachers can access a Take Your Dad to School Week “Tool Kit” for ideas on holding father-friendly school events provided by the Michigan Fatherhood Coalition and available through the Department of Education.
