Father Fact

Youths are more at risk of first substance use without a highly involved father. Each unit increase in father involvement is associated with 1% reduction in substance use. Living in an intact family also decreases the risk of first substance use.

Michigan Fatherhood Coalition Legislative Breakfast

February has been proclaimed as Responsible Fatherhood Awareness Month in Michigan by Governor Jennifer Granholm.  In celebration a legislative breakfast will be held sponsored by the Michigan Fatherhood Coalition and generously supported by:

● The Council of Michigan Foundations,
● Michigan Children’s Trust Fund
● Courtland Consulting, and
● Spectrum Human Services.

Along with breakfast, an exhibition of fatherhood programming that are focused on improving outcomes for Michigan’s youngest citizens, our children, will be on display.  The intent of this effort is to educate our legislature on the importance of fatherhood programming and emphasize the critical role responsible fathers play in healthy family life.

Location:  State Capital Building - North Wing

We have been working toward and are hopeful that the Michigan Responsible Fatherhood Awareness Proclamation will be read on both the house and senate floors.

Summer Series on Enhancing Parental Involvement in Child Protective Proceedings: Legal Issues Regard

TIME: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This interactive, case-based training will address the legal issues and practice problems confronting attorneys, judges, and caseworkers involved with fathers’ issues in child protective proceedings. Topics addressed will include:
• The constitutional rights and responsibilities of fathers
• Legal versus biological fathers
• Establishing paternity
• The role of the family court in child protective proceedings when there are putative father issues

TARGET AUDIENCE:
• Prosecutors/Assistant Attorneys General
• Lawyer-guardians ad litem and parents’ attorneys
• Children’s Protective Services workers
• Department of Human Services and private agency caseworkers
• Judges and referees
• Tribal caseworkers, judges, and related staff
• CASAs, Foster Care Review Board members, and related child welfare professionals

REGISTRATION: Fill out and return the completed Training Registration form no later than May 19, 2008.
